Castor oil packs have become one of those quiet, steady companions in my clinic – simple, gentle, and deeply supportive. When you’re living with Endometriosis, it’s often the small, consistent practices that help you feel more at home in your body again.
As someone that was diagnosed with severe Endometriosis in my Twenties, I know how physically painful and emotionally exhausting it is. How it impacts every level and layer of life. Also how important it is that any support we choose feels nourishing rather than overwhelming. Castor oil packs are one such modality for me.
What is a Castor Oil Pack?
For those not familiar with it, a castor oil pack involves applying organic, cold-pressed castor oil to a piece of natural cloth (such as cotton or flannel), placing it over the lower abdomen, and often adding gentle warmth with a heat pack or hot water bottle.
It’s wonderfully low-tech. No expensive equipment. Just warmth, stillness and time.
Why Castor Oil for Endometriosis?
Although there is limited scientific evidence on the benefits of using castor oil packs as few studies have been carried out, Castor oil has been used traditionally for centuries to support:
- Lymphatic flow
- Circulation
- Deep relaxation
- Soothing muscular tension
- Supporting scar tissue
With Endometriosis, we’re often working with pelvic congestion, inflammation, and adhesions. The warmth of the pack helps increase circulation to the area, while castor oil is believed to support lymphatic movement and tissue health. Some women report:
- Reduced pelvic pain
- Fewer cramps
- Improved bowel comfort
- A greater sense of ease in the pelvis
- Better sleep on the evenings they use a pack
It’s not a cure, and it doesn’t replace medical care. But it can be a deeply supportive addition to your wider plan.
The Nervous System Piece (Often Overlooked)
One of the most important benefits I see in practice isn’t just physical.
When you lie down for 30–45 minutes with warmth over your womb space, you are signalling safety to your nervous system. And when the nervous system softens, the systems in the body that are holding tension can soften too.
Endometriosis is not just a “local” pelvic issue – it is a whole-body condition influenced by stress, immune function, and hormonal balance. Regular rest practices matter. Castor oil packs gently invite that pause.
How to use Castor Oil Packs
Keep it simple:
- Soak a folded piece of cotton or flannel in organic cold-pressed castor oil.
- Place it over your lower abdomen (below the belly button).
- Cover with an old towel.
- Add a hot water bottle on top.
- Rest for 30–45 minutes.
Aim for 3–4 times per week, ideally in the follicular phase of your cycle (after your bleed has finished and before ovulation). Avoid using during menstruation as it can increase the heaviness of your flow, and avoid if pregnant or if advised otherwise by your practitioner.
Consistency matters more than intensity. It is always best to carry out a patch text first, as although uncommon, it is possible to have a sensitivity to castor oil.
I always suggest starting slow, and gradually building up the length of time you use a castor oil pack so your body is able to adjust gently and get the most out of the treatments.
A Gentle Reminder
Endometriosis often leaves women feeling frustrated, unheard, or disconnected from their bodies. Practices like this are not just about symptom management – they’re about rebuilding trust.
You don’t need to do everything at once. Starting with one supportive ritual can be a wonderful way to begin your self-care, healing path. Let it be nurturing rather than another task on your list.
Sometimes healing begins with simply placing your hands over your belly, adding warmth, and allowing your body to soften.
If you’re unsure whether castor oil packs are right for you, or you’d like guidance on integrating them into a wider Endometriosis support plan, I’m always here to help.
Warmly,
Cathryn
