Abdominal Therapy – Frequently Asked Questions
A gentle, supportive approach to pelvic wellbeing
Abdominal Therapy can feel unfamiliar at first, and it’s completely natural to have questions. Below you’ll find answers to some of the things I’m most often asked.
If you don’t see your question here, you’re always welcome to get in touch.
What is Abdominal Therapy?
Abdominal Therapy is a gentle, external hands-on treatment focused on the abdomen, pelvis and lower back.
The techniques are slow, respectful and non-invasive. They aim to encourage healthy circulation, ease areas of tension, and support overall pelvic wellbeing.
It is not a medical treatment but rather a complementary approach that works alongside your wider support.
What might it support?
Abdominal Therapy is often sought by women who are:
- Trying to conceive
- Experiencing uncomfortable or irregular cycles
- Living with pelvic tension or discomfort
- Looking for support with prolapse, scar tissue or recovery
- Wanting to reconnect with their abdominal and pelvic space
Rather than targeting a specific condition, the intention is to create a more nourished, relaxed and supported environment within the abdomen.
Does it hurt?
No. The work is gentle.
At times you may notice tenderness in certain areas — particularly if there has been previous tension or holding, scar tissue from previous surgery or adhesions — but the pressure is always adjusted to your comfort. The aim is to soften, not to force.
You are encouraged to give feedback throughout.
Is it internal?
No. Abdominal Therapy is entirely external.
All techniques are applied over the abdomen, pelvis and lower back.
How many sessions would I need?
This varies from person to person.
Many women begin with 2–3 sessions to establish the work and then decide how they would like to continue. Some choose occasional support around certain times of their cycle, while others prefer a more regular rhythm.
During your first appointment, we can talk through what feels appropriate for you.
Will I be given something to do at home?
Yes — if it feels right for you.
One of the most empowering aspects of Abdominal Therapy is learning a simple self-care routine that can be practised at home in just 10 minutes a day. This helps to gently maintain circulation and relaxation between sessions.
There is no pressure. It is simply an invitation.
Can it be used alongside medical or fertility treatment?
Yes, Abdominal Therapy can be tailored to complement your care.
If you are undergoing fertility treatment or receiving medical support, Abdominal Therapy treatments can be a good support. It’s important to keep your healthcare provider informed of any complementary therapies you are using. Timing can sometimes need to be considered, and this can be discussed together.
Is it suitable for everyone?
There are certain times when Abdominal Therapy may not be appropriate, such as during early pregnancy, active infection, immediately after surgery, or with certain medical conditions.
A full consultation is taken before treatment to ensure the work is safe and appropriate for you.
If there is ever uncertainty, we err on the side of caution.
What does it feel like?
Many women describe feeling:
- Warmth in the lower abdomen
- A sense of softness or space
- Deep relaxation
- Emotional release
- Better awareness of their cycle
But every body is different. There is no “right” response.
Sometimes the most meaningful shift is simply feeling more connected to your body again.
If you’re curious about whether Abdominal Therapy might be supportive for you, you’re warmly invited to reach out. We can talk it through gently, without pressure, and see whether it feels like the right fit.
Warm wishes,
Cathryn
