Castor Oil Balms

Why it matters

Castor oil penetrates deeply into the tissues, which means the quality of everything you use matters — the oil itself, and everything it touches. At 87% concentration, this balm delivers the same therapeutic depth as the liquid oil, in a form that's simpler and far less messy to apply. The beeswax gives it just the right consistency to rub in without sliding, and the natural vitamin E supports both the skin and the stability of the oil. Stored in amber glass to keep the oil completely free from plastic contact.

If you're using this as part of a castor oil pack, we recommend pairing with an organic, undyed and unbleached cotton cloth — so nothing synthetic comes between the oil and your skin as it absorbs.

Choose your scent

Unscented — pure castor oil balm, nothing added. Ideal for those with sensitivities or who prefer to keep their practice fragrance-free.

With organic Lavender essential oil — calming, relaxing and gently grounding. Particularly lovely for evening use and sleep support.

With Frankincense essential oil — deeply grounding and warming, with a long history of use for joint comfort and skin support. Please note: we are currently working through our final batch of the Frankincense balm and it will not be restocked once this batch is sold. This is because Frankincense is a threatened or vulnerable species due to over-exploitation. 

How to use

A few of the ways this balm earns its place in your routine:

Rub the balm directly into the area you wish to treat — the warmth of your hands helps the oil absorb more deeply. For extra benefit, apply a little warmth: a heat pack placed over an old t-shirt works beautifully, and slim self-adhesive heat packs worn under clothing mean you can keep the treatment going throughout the day.

The organic cotton cloth can be placed over the area to protect your clothing, or used to gently wipe away the balm after treatment. (The cloth doesn't have ties to secure it in place, but can be used inside an old bra to support breast health, or held in place with large pants for lower abdominal support)

Why this balm — and not just castor oil liquid?

Most castor oil products on the market are either pure liquid oil or very lightly thickened. At 87% castor oil concentration, this balm sits in a different category — semi-solid enough to stay exactly where you put it, light enough to absorb well with a little warmth. There is very little else like it available in the UK.

For anyone who has tried castor oil liquid and found the mess, the soaking cloths, or the logistics of keeping everything in place too much to sustain, the balm removes almost all of those barriers. It makes a regular castor oil practice genuinely possible — not just on the days when you have time and energy, but on the ordinary ones too. It also works well for the areas of your body that can be more difficult to use a castor oil compress on.

Ingredients & materials

Balm: Ricinus communis (cold-pressed, hexane-free) seed oil*, Cera alba (beeswax), Triticum vulgare germ oil (vitamin E)* — *organic · amber glass

Lavender balm includes: Lavandula angustifolia (organic lavender) essential oil — naturally occurring Linalool

Frankincense balm includes: Boswellia serrata essential oil — naturally occurring Alpha-Pinene, Limonene, 3-Carene, p-Cymene

Optional organic cotton cloth: 100% GOTS certified organic cotton flannel · 40 x 40cm · undyed and unbleached

Care

The organic cotton cloth is fully washable and reusable. For cleaning, soak in bicarbonate of soda and hot water for 20 minutes. Rinse with non-toxic soap and air dry.

Please note

• For external use only · avoid contact with eyes
• We recommend a patch test before use, as although rare, allergic responses to castor oil are possible
• Castor oil can stain — use old clothing and protect furniture and bedding during use
• Avoid during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or after ovulation if trying to conceive
• Do not use on open wounds, irritated or broken skin
• Take care with additional heat over scar tissue, where there may be reduced sensation
• Castor oil may increase blood flow — use with care during menstruation if you experience heavier bleeds
